So I want to upgrade to windows vista beta 2 from my windows xp. I know that
in order to not lose all my data I need to run the installation while running
windows. But when I put the dvd in an error comes up saying "not a valid
win32 application". So how do I perform a vista uprade?

Are you using a 32 bit computer and still downloaded the 64 bit version of
Vista?
Or perhaps it is a bad download.

I have a 64 bit computer and downloaded the 64 bit version. And after I did
the upgrade wouldn't I just be able to do a system restore? I forgot to
mention the I have xp media center.

You can't upgrade from XP Media Center which is a 32 bit operating system.
You can't upgrade from 32 bit to 64 -bit, you need to do a clean install.
And you can't use system restore restore your older version Windows, clean
install only.

You cannot upgrade from Windows XP x86 (32-bit) to Windows Vista x64
(64-bit), different platforms. You need to do a clean installation. I
personally would not knock out my production install of Windows XP for a
beta. But if you have it backed up and really want to test it, fine, be my
guest, but at least have your data backed up.

You could try alternative methods of installing such as creating a logical
partition and install Vista on it. When you get tired of the Vista BETA you
can always go back to XP.
